Bob Tiernan

Community Member  /  Inducted in 2008

Bob Tiernan has contributed a tremendous amount of time and effort into enhancing the athletic facilities at Marion High School.

Bob has been a key component in numerous projects at the Marion football stadium.  He helped set poles and build the platform for the sound system speakers and hung signs and lighting on the sound system platform. He assisted in digging holes for the goal posts and new scoreboard. Bob also helped underground crews run power and sound wires to the press box along with helping set the I-Beam for the new scoreboard.  Bob served on the sophomore football chain crew for nine years before joining the varsity crew this season.

Bob has also contributed strongly to the Marion baseball program.  He lined up the crane and welding crew for foul pole extensions on the left field fence and helped set poles and electricity for the batting cages. He was on the committee for the design of the baseball/softball concession stand and has been strong contributor to Marion Youth Baseball program.



Carole Canavan

Community Member  /  Inducted in 2008

Carole Canavan has been a strong supporter and contributor to Marion High School since 1984. Carole helped raise money for the high school track by delivering phone books and working garage sales.  She worked track meets at Marion High School from 1984-2004 as a timer, baton exchange judge, and helper on the long jump.

Carole was a member of the sophomore chain crew at Marion High School before joining the varsity chain crew from 1986-2007.  She also contributed many hours cleaning the stadium, doing field preparation, and selling tickets when Coe College used the Marion football field.  She also served many years on the chain crew at Coe College.



RonGeater08Ron Geater

Athlete  / MHS Class of 1987  /  Inducted in 2008

Ron Geater participated in football, track, basketball, and wrestling while at Marion High School.

In football as a defensive lineman, Ron was named Class 3A first team All-State and All-Class Elite Team All-State by the Des Moines Register and first team All-WaMaC his senior year.  He was a Super Prep All-Midwest selection and USA Today honorable mention All-American.

Ron participated in basketball, track, and wrestling for two seasons at Marion High School In wrestling, he was a first team All-WaMaC performer his junior and senior years.  As a senior he qualified for the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament at super heavyweight.

Ron accepted a full scholarship to play football at the University of Iowa where he played defensive end.  He was named first team All-Big Ten in 1991. He was selected as the Sports Illustrated Defensive Player of the Week in 1991 for his efforts against Purdue.  He set a new  Hawkeyel team record for tackles for a loss. Ron was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of NFL draft and played for the Broncos during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.



KristinPopovics08Kristin (Popovics) Kealey

Athlete  / MHS Class of 2000 /  Inducted in 2008

Kristin Popovics participated in basketball, cross country, and golf at Marion High School.

In basketball, Kristin was a first team All-State, All-District, and All-Metro selection her junior and senior years.  In addition, she was selected first team All-WaMaCher sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.  Kristin was named to the USA Today Honorable Mention All-American team her senior year.  She holds many basketball records at Marion High School including the all-time scoring record with 1,465 points.

Kristin earned WaMaC All-Academic honors her junior and senior years.  She accepted a full ride scholarship to Holy Cross to play college basketball.  She earned her degree and was named to the Patriot League All-Academic team in 2004.



JohnRoyer08John Royer

Athlete  /  MHS Class of 1989  /  Inducted in 2008

John Royer participated in baseball, football, and wrestling at Marion High School.

John was a three-time WaMaC champion wrestler, qualifying for the state tournament for three years. He won the state championship as a senior and finished fifth as a junior.

In football, John played quarterback and was named second team All-Conference and honorable mention All-State his senior year.  Also, he was an All-WaMaC performer in baseball his senior season.

After high school, John attended Kirkwood Community College where he qualified for the Junior College National Wrestling Tournament.



MikeSimpson08Mike Simpson

Athlete  /  MHS Class of 1984  /  Inducted in 2008

Mike Simpson participated in football and basketball while at Marion High School.

In football, Mike was named Class 3A second team All-State by the Des Moines Register, first team All-WaMaC, and first team All-Eastern Iowa as a defensive back his senior year in football.

In basketball as a senior, Mike earned second team All-WaMaC, and second team All-Metro honors He was also named Second Team All-WaMaC his junior season.

Mike later moved to Texas where he was a successful high school basketball coach.



MattWycoff08Matt Wycoff

Athlete  /  MHS Class of 2000  /  Inducted in 2008

Matt Wycoff participated in football, track, baseball, and wrestling at Marion High School.

Matt finished third at the state wrestling tournament his junior and senior seasons at 189 lbs.  He was a two-time WaMaC Conference champion and was named first team All-Metro three times.  At the time Matt graduated, he held the Iowa high school career record for falls with 121.

Matt finished his football career as the all-time leading rusher in school history with 3,686 yards and 43 rushing touchdowns.   He was named first team All-Metro and first team All-District his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. As a senior he was named second team All-State by the Iowa Daily Press Association as a defensive back and first team All-State by the Des Moines Register as a running back. As a junior he earned honorable mention All-State from the IDPA as a defensive back. As a sophomore he was named second team All-State by the IDPA and third team by the Register as a running back.

Matt also excelled in track and baseball while at Marion.

Matt graduated from Coe College where he played football.  He finished as the school’s seventh all-time leading rusher.  He was twice named Iowa Conference Player of the Week and earned first team All-Conference honors his senior year.  Matt played two seasons of Indoor Arena Football after graduating from Coe.

After college he became a physical education teacher and coached football, wrestling, and track.
