Thurness Memorial Fund

Dr. Robert Thurness had an impact on hundreds of kids as he helped shape and transform high school students into young men and women, preparing them for the future.

In the Marion community, Dr. Thurness, also known as “Thurny,” is fondly remembered for his role as Varsity football coach and for leading the 1980 football team to the school’s only 3A State Football Championship. Vaughn Klopfenstein, 1980 Football Team Captain, remembers Thurny as “having a very distinctive and gruff voice, but was always very caring. He set the bar high, for himself, for the team, and for everyone as an individual both on the field and in academics.”

Dr. Thurness passed away on October 13, 2018 and will be fondly remembered by many. His loving family is honoring Dr. Thurness by establishing a scholarship fund in his name to be awarded annually to a graduating senior of Marion High School. Donations will also be used to place a memorial bench at the front of the high school.
