Start School Right was started by a teacher in 2015 with the intention of providing district families the support they need before kids head back to school. A volunteer committee of district staff and community members plans and hosts this event each year in early August. Students attending receive school supplies, haircuts, vision and dental exams, clothing, food, bedding and more thanks to a variety of local partners.
In recent years, the Foundation has sought funding from local businesses and organizations to add hygiene items and gym shoes, as well as increase the number of school supplies available to each student. Community resource tables are also an important part of the event so families can learn about what year-round support is available in the local community through other non-profit organizations.
