On Veterans Day we pay our respects to those who have served, including many alumni and others with connections to MISD. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans in all wars.
Sponsored by the Schlotterback family, the Marion Independent School Foundation and Alumni Association maintains a veterans display case located in the hallway of the administrative wing at Marion High School. Current items on display feature veterans including:
- CPL Kenneth “Ken” Churchill, Class of 1966
- Thomas Spratt, MHS Class of 1960
- Col. Richard C. Fontaine, MHS class of 1947
- John Scarborough Miller, Class of 1941
- Col. William Norman Reed, Class of 1935
- Specialist Four Renee Stanard, MISD Staff
Thank you to those who have served and to the friends and family members who support them. We appreciate you!
