How Ice Cream Sales Provided School Lunches

Kerry Patrick of Cedar Rapids is an excellent ice cream maker. But you will only try his ice cream with a donation. Each week, Kerry chooses a different charity and those who donate are eligible to win that week’s pint. Fitting for this year, the minimum donation in order to qualify for one of his drawings is $20.20.

The week of February 2-8 featured the flavor butter brickle, a favorite of former Marion school counselor Ron Thomason. Ron passed in February 2019, and with his memorial gifts, his wife and children chose to start a fund that helps provide school lunches to kids in need. MISD students who are eligible to receive assistance from the fund have experienced a family hardship but do not qualify for free or reduced lunch, and have demonstrated a good-faith effort in keeping current with their payments. To date, $640.65 has been distributed.
